Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dynamic action RPG that draws handfuls from the soulslike genre. The title focuses on spectacular battles requiring dexterity and proper strategy. The production was developed by Team Ninja studio, the authors of the NiOh and Ninja Gaiden series known for their high level of difficulty.
Storyline
In the year 184, the reign of the Chinese Han Dynasty is coming to an end. Corruption and persecution are rampant in the empire, and ever-increasing taxes prompt the people to rise up against the authorities. The Yellow Turban Uprising breaks out in the country, one of whose leaders is the charismatic Zhang Jiao. The internal conflict brings chaos to China, which blood-thirsty demons take advantage of.
At the dawn of the Age of Three Kingdoms, one of the militia soldiers, and the main character of the game, is sent to fight the rebels. As a result of an unexpected encounter during the journey, he becomes embroiled in an intrigue much bigger than a peasant uprising.
Mechanics
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a third-person production, in which we start the gameplay by creating our own alter ego. Then we choose weapons from a rich arsenal (available include sabers and gleves) that best suits our style - we can bet on one- or two-handed weapons, as well as equip the hero with two blades.
During the course of the gameplay we will encounter both human opponents and mythical monsters often assuming huge sizes. In fighting them, the Spirit indicator (Spirit) is crucial, which determines our level of Qi energy used to perform special techniques. Its level increases with each offensive move and perfect deflection of enemy attacks, and decreases when the protagonist is pushed to the defensive.
In Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Qi energy is used to perform the strongest attacks based on martial arts with specific weapons. With its help, we also use spells representing the five phases from Chinese philosophy (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). Thanks to them we can press lightning bolts into our opponents, set them on fire or increase the potential of our weapons.
In the most difficult clashes, we will take the help of the Divine Beast, which, when summoned, will not only hurt the enemy, but also temporarily increase some of the hero's qualities. Among the available creatures we will find characters from Chinese mythology (the White Tiger Baihu, the dragon Quinlong or the bird Zhuque).
An important aspect of the game is the Morale level, which both the protagonist and his opponents have. It increases with each victorious battle, making our character stronger and stronger. We can lower its level in enemies by, among other things, performing surprise attacks. However, if we defeat an opponent who has a higher Morale than the protagonist, our indicator will develop much faster.
Online modes
The work of the Ninja Team studio offers the possibility to play together with other users over a network connection. In the cooperative mode we will invite up to two people to join the struggle and together face the dangers of Chinese history and myths. We will also face other players in direct duels thanks to the option of invading other people's worlds.
