God of War is the seventh installment of the legendary God of War slasher series and the first one entirely prepared with the eighth-generation console in mind. The in-house development studio, Sony Interactive Entertainment Santa Monica, is responsible for creating the game, as with previous installments. God Of War series is invariably focused on spectacular bloody action and impressive model of fighting with powerful bosses. What's more, their hero, the Greek warrior Kratos, quickly became one of the icons of video games.

Story

The main hero of God of War is once again Kratos. After anger-filled Greek adventures that culminated in the destruction of Mount Olympus and the deaths of many Hellenic gods and heroes, the protagonist flees to the far North in search of respite. There, he finds new love and starts a family. After the unexpected death of his wife he is left alone with a young son named Atreus. Unfortunately, the peace does not last long, as Kratos learns when he sets out with his offspring to scatter the ashes of the dead woman. The road to his destination is strewn with difficulties, and an army of beasts known from Norse mythology awaits the uninvited guests. During his journey, Kratos must also face the consequences of his past actions and the uncontrollable anger still bubbling in his heart.

Mechanics

God of War introduces previously absent gameplay elements and changes its pace and flow a bit. This is evident not only in the change of camera, which now, in the manner of modern action adventure games, is constantly behind our backs, but also in the narrative and tone of the entire story. Kratos abandons his favorite weapon, chained double blades, in favor of an axe that can be summoned back after being thrown. We improve our weapons by choosing special attacks with different characteristics: thanks to them we can increase the damage inflicted or freeze opponents. Additionally, we have many types of armor at our disposal, which we can strengthen thanks to the crafting system.

During the adventure, players travel through open levels, hiding many secrets, nooks and crannies, as well as optional encounters with enemies. The game could not lack spectacular fights with bosses, which are one of the characteristic features of the series. Instead of multi-stage clashes based mainly on quick time events, the player has control over Kratos' movements almost all the time. Two bars are displayed above the boss' head, informing about his life points and the extent to which he has been stunned.

Also helping us in the fight is Atreus, whom we give commands to with a separate button. In the right moment he can support us with, for example, arrows from a bow. Similarly to his father, the boy gains better armor and new skills and attacks.

Technical issues

The authors of God of War used the power of PS4 to provide spectacular action and visuals, impossible to achieve in previous parts of the series. The title also offers additional fireworks and graphical options for PlayStation 4 Pro owners. Once again, we also have to deal with exceptionally inventive and spectacular cinematic interludes and multi-stage boss fights. The game's soundtrack is created by American composer Bear McCreary, whose work has been featured in numerous award-winning TV series including Battlestar Galactica, Eureka, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, The Walking Dead and Outlander.

God of War on PC

The PC version, released nearly four years after the console release, offers a number of graphical enhancements to take advantage of the powerful graphics cards, including support for 4K resolution, a lifted animation frame rate limit, and support for NVIDIA DLSS technology. In addition to support for Sony DualShock and DualSense controllers, God of War now also supports mouse and keyboard controls. Support for 21:9 ultra-wide-screen monitors has also been implemented.
